Retreat with the Mystics: Merton, Hillesum, de Chardin

July 8-12, 2018
6:00 p.m. Sunday - 12:00 noon Thursday

Beginning with an overview of Christian mysticism, each presenter offers an in-depth look into a remarkable mystic.

Joe Raab, Professor of Religious Studies and Theology at Siena Heights University, explores the mysticism of Thomas Merton. Dr. Raab has written extensively on the life and writings of Thomas Merton and is presently coeditor of the peer-reviewed academic journal “The Merton Annual: Studies in Culture, Spirituality, and Social Concerns.”
Arlene Kosmatka, OP, a Dominican Sister of Adrian, Michigan, looks at the life of Etty Hillesum and how it reveals the power of love in the midst of dysfunction, discovery, suffering, and violence. Arlene’s passion for 20th-century mysticism and mystics was ignited by Karl Rahner’s statement regarding the Christian of the future being a mystic or nothing at all: a statement she explored in her master’s thesis.
Kathleen Duffy, Professor of Physics at Chestnut Hill College, where she directs the Institute for Religion and Science, follows Pierre Teilhard de Chardin — through input, prayer, song, film, contemplative activities, and sharing — as he travels ever more deeply from Circle to Circle in the heart of the Cosmic Christ. She is the editor of “Teilhard Studies” and serves on the Advisory Boards of the American Teilhard Association and Cosmos and Creation.
